Aquarius Sun Sign

Around 21 January – around 19 February

Symbol: The Water Bearer Quality: Fixed Element: Air Ruler: Saturn & Uranus

Aquarius has always been associated with water, hence its symbol, the water carrier. The Egyptians associated it with the flooding of the Nile and the spiritual forces of renewal and fertility. The Babylonians connected it with their god Utnapishtim, who had heeded divine warnings of the end of the world and built a boat that saved him from a giant flood. (This story is the model for that of Noah in the Biblical book of Genesis, of course.)

More modern astrologers, however, have connected Aquarius with Prometheus, who had been freed from imprisonment and torment by Chiron. It is these qualities of independence and intellectual freedom, with which Aquarius is most associated. This reflects itself differently in the planets that sit within the sign. When it is in Aquarius, the Moon is free to be emotional, quirky and answerable to no-one, while Mercury tends to display some of his most brilliant facets here.

KEY WORDS: Individual, detached, cold, ingenious, rebellious.
